Got dry, chapped lips? Treat them to an all-natural, homemade essential oil lip balm made with coconut oil, and say goodbye to chapping!

Lip balm is essential for moisturizing and protecting your lips, but store-bought options can be expensive.

So, why not make your own with ingredients you trust? This DIY beauty recipe requires just a few ingredients and about 15 minutes of your time—so, NO EXCUSES!

Plus, it’s all-natural, so you can rest assured that your lips are being pampered with pure, quality ingredients.

Why Coconut Oil for Lips?

Coconut oil offers many health and beauty benefits.

Coconut oil is the star ingredient in this DIY recipe due to its numerous health and wellness benefits. It nourishes, hydrates, and softens your lips, making them feel revived and healthy.

Here are some reasons to use coconut oil in lip balm:

  • Safe to use on lips and easy to apply
  • Rich in Omega 3, 6, 9, as well as vitamins and minerals
  • Has healing properties that soothe chapped lips
  • Acts as an emollient, softening and moisturizing the skin and lips
  • Works as a natural lip gloss, leaving a beautiful shine
  • Excellent for treating dry lips and chapped skin
  • Helps prevent premature aging

If you’re allergic to coconut oil, consider using other carrier oils or butters like shea butter, cocoa butter, olive oil, castor oil, or jojoba oil as a substitute.

Other Lip Balm Ingredients

Beeswax add solidity to the coconut oil base.

Beeswax is used to give the coconut oil (or your chosen carrier oil) more solidity. While you can omit beeswax, doing so will make your DIY lip balm more prone to melting, as coconut oil liquefies at 76°F, which may make it harder to apply to your lips.

For natural coloring, I added a little Burt’s Bees Apricot Lip Shimmer, but you can use any favorite lipstick brand to tint your balm, or omit this step altogether. Adding a touch of color is a nice option, but you can keep it all-natural or choose to color it with natural minerals or pigments.

Some people even use beetroot powder for a rosy hue.

Essential Oils for Lip Balm

Essential oils are a fantastic addition to lip balm recipes, not only for their fragrance but also for their beneficial properties, which can include softening lips. However, be cautious with phototoxic essential oils.

Essential oils offer various benefits, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.

Here are some great essential oil blend options for your lip balm:

  • Coconut Oil & Beeswax Lip Balm: Omit essential oils entirely, using only beeswax and coconut oil.
  • Vegan Lip Balm: Omit beeswax completely, using only coconut oil and essential oils.
  • Healing Lip Balm: Use 6 drops of Lavender essential oil and 4 drops of Frankincense essential oil.
  • Invigorating Peppermint Lip Balm: Use 10 drops of Peppermint essential oil (or Spearmint oil).
  • Cleansing Lip Balm: Use 5 drops of Tea Tree oil and 5 drops of Lemon oil.
  • Citrus Lip Balm: Use 10 drops of Tangerine (sweet orange would work too).
  • Frankincense Lip Balm: Use 10 drops of Frankincense essential oil.
  • Lavender Lip Balm: Use 10 drops of Lavender essential oil.

How to Make Coconut Oil Lip Balm with Essential Oils

You'll want to use small but wide-mouth containers or lip balm tubes to store your balm.

This homemade coconut oil lip balm is easy to make and great for keeping your lips hydrated. Plus, it has a delicious coconut flavor!

Customize this lip care recipe by adding essential oils—try peppermint for a refreshing twist or lavender for a soothing effect.

Ingredients:

  • 10 drops Essential Oil of Choice
  • 2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 2 teaspoons White Beeswax Pellets
  • 1/4 oz Mini Glass Jars (x4)
  • Small Slice of Favorite Lipstick for Tint (optional)

Directions:

1. Melt the beeswax and coconut oil together using a double boiler method. Place both ingredients into a glass Pyrex measuring cup, then set the cup into a pan with gently boiling water.

2. Remove from heat once melted. If desired, add a small slice of lipstick to tint the lip balm.

3. Stir the mixture with a popsicle stick until fully combined.

4. Mix in the essential oils.

5. Pour the mixture evenly into four lip balm containers. Allow it to cool completely, then place the lids on and add labels.

To use, apply a small amount to your finger and rub onto your lips. The shelf life is up to 6 months, depending on the expiration date of the ingredients used. Store the balm in a cool, dry place away from sun and heat.

Not only are these fun to use for you and your family, but they are great gifts as well!
