Melt and Pour Soap Base For Essential Oils

Melt and pour bases allow you to add color, plant pieces, or essential oils to create your own unique soap.

Melt and Pour soap bases are especially great for beginners or those DIYers that are not committed to crafting cold process soap.

To use melt and pour soap, all you have to do is cut up the soap block, melt it down, add color and scent, then pour into your desired soap mold. Check out our full tutorial below.

I prefer a Shea Butter melt and pour base because it has hydrating and nourishing properties. You can also use goat’s milk, glycerin, or whatever melt and pour soap base you prefer.

Essential Oils For Soap Making

Conifer scents are great for fresh smelling soaps.

Conifers typically consist of evergreen trees that bear cones and needle-like leaves. Coniferous essential oils are steam distilled from these trees and produce aromas that are woodsy, piney and earthy. Often times, it is reminiscent of a fresh forest or Christmas time.

In general, conifer oils are supportive to the lungs and airway passages. They can also be grounding, uplifting, and stimulating.

I choose white fir for my soap bars. I really love the sharp pine aroma this oil has. It is so energizing and invigorating, especially great for a morning shower. Here are some options to choose from:

  • Silver Fir (aka White Fir)
  • Douglas Fir
  • Balsam Fir
  • Siberian Fir
  • Scots Pine (aka Scotch pine)
  • Hemlock
  • Black Spruce

DIY Essential Oil Massage Soap Recipe

Create your own aromas and colors to match your personality.

A great way to pamper yourself is with a massage. It's even better if you can do it in the comfort of your own home!

With the plethora of melt and pour soap options available, making your own personalized soap is easy.

Ingredients needed:

  • 1 pound of melt and pour soap base
  • 1 teaspoon essential oil of choice
  • Glass measuring cup (size 4 cups)
  • Silicone massage soap mold
  • Spray bottle with Rubbing Alcohol

Step by Step Tutorial:

Step 1: Cut up the soap block with a sharp knife into small squares. This helps it to melt quicker. Place the cut up soap into the glass measuring cup.

Step 2: Place the measuring cup into a pot with several inches of boiling water. You do not want rapid boiling because that can cause water to splash into your soap base.

Step 3: Stir occasionally until base completely melts (no solid chunks left). Takes 10-15 minutes. Once melted, remove from heat using a pot holder because the handle will be hot.

Step 4: Add in the essential oils and stir well. I used White Fir for my pine scent and Blue Tansy essential oil for the coloration of the soap, it adds a soft minty color. It also adds a unique aroma but this oil can be omitted.

Step 5: Pour soap into soap mold. I filled almost 4 massage bar molds with this recipe (one bar was just a little shorter).

Step 6: Immediately spray the exposed tops of soap with rubbing alcohol, this helps to pop the bubbles so the soap is smooth on top.

Step 7: Let cool until the soap hardens, usually about 2-3 hours. Pop soap bars out of silicone mold. The unused soap bars will need to be wrapped in plastic wrap for storage to avoid having them sweat (also called glycerin dew).
